Namaste
and a very good morning to one and all present here. I’m R.
Bharathi of class 8, studying in SRDF Vivekananda Vidyalaya. I am
here to talk about some creatures, which are a few of the many which
helps the man to wake his soul. I am also going to talk about the
importance of those creatures in our ecosystem. Yes, I am here to
talk on the topic, “The Ecological Importance of Farm Animals.”
Now,
as I’ve got a lengthy topic let me first divide it. That makes it
“ecological” and “importance of farm animals” My first
question is, “what’s ecology or what an ecosystem is?”
Ecosystem is a community of interacting organisms and their
environment. Ecology is the study of ecosystem. My second question is
“what are farm animals?” the simple answer I get is that the
animals which are raised in a farm are called farm animals. So, is
dog a farm animal? Certainly not. So let me make it clear. Animals
which help in farming or agriculture are called farm animals.
Next,
some may ask “how do these animals help in an ecological way?” As
I had mentioned earlier, ecosystem is the conjunction of living and
non-living components of the society. Farm animals such as cows,
goats, hens and sheep provide us with many things such as milk, meat,
wool, eggs etc. their waste can fertilize the soil with rich
nutrients. In fact, when these animals graze, they actually pull out
unwanted weeds too. Bullocks can help in ploughing the field. When
you’re herding with your sheep and you have lost your way, your
sheep can find pasture lands nearby. In fact, the farm animals are
smarter than us in a few ways.
Cows
are animals which provide us many things in many ways. They’re
widely worshipped in our Indian culture. Cows provide us with milk,
ghee, butter, curd etc.Even their waste is useful. In early days, cow
dung was mixed up with water and was used to clean the house because
our ancestors knew that it has best anti-bacterial properties. Cow
dung proves to be a very good natural fertilizer. Dried cow dung
cakes can even produce electricity! So it's not just milk and food,
cows can even give you electricity to charge your iPads and Smart
phones!
Farm
animals are also beneficial in economical ways. They are tertiary to
the primary activity called agriculture. We depend on agriculture for
food, agriculture depends on farmers for area to develop and farmers
depend on these domestic animals to help him. In any view at this
circle, all three of us are benefited just because of these animals.
Today, machines are used in place of bullocks for ploughing the
fields. But, can it match all the qualities of a bullock? We have to
agree that machines may be faster than the bullocks. But after all,
machines run with the help of diesel. This might at least contribute
a little towards the pollution of air. Now, you may think, comparing
to machines, bullocks are a bit eco- friendly. Those days, humans
used bullocks also as a transport to navigate across the village too.
You
might have heard your grandparents saying that those were “the
days.” And you might have argued with them by talking about the
latest technology and gadgets. But the actual thing they meant was
they had lived a healthy life. Those days, they had bred their own
cows and hens in their homes. They collected fresh produce, ate fresh
food and lived a fresh life. But these days, we buy frost chicken
from supermarkets in which they’d have surely added some sort of
preservatives. One of the major threats faced today, especially by
the young generation is obesity. This is mainly due to the
preservatives in those packaged foods. And also, we the humans are
nowadays very patient less. We mix chemicals in animal feed to yield
more produce. Actually, this not only poisons them, but it also
poisons us. We can’t change the past, but we can change at the
present to reshape our future.
When
we see a cow or a goat in our street, what is the first thing we do?
Take a stone and throw at it. Is this how we treat creatures which
have helped for our own survival today? Sometimes, we even kill these
animals for fun.
“Animals
never kill for sport. Man is the only one who kills his fellow
creatures for his own amusement.”
So
next time when you see a farm animal, do remember that it’s also
because of its effort you are living today peacefully.
I’d
like to conclude my speech by saying what I had said in the
beginning, “a part of your soul awakens only when you love an
animal.” Thank You.
