Carve the Mark - review

I completed reading 'Carve the Mark' by Veronica Roth a few days ago. To be exact, two weeks ago. It is completely different from other science fiction stories that I've read so far. It is a duology, and I've read only the first part.

This galaxy had nine planets, and the story mainly revolves in a planet called Thuvhe/Urek. Each planet has different type of ruling, government and different people. The shotet and thuvhe, although living on same planet, don't agree on all things. The shotet are violent and war engaging and bloody, whereas the thuvhe are soft, kind farmers. Ryzek Noavek is the current leader of the shotet.Everyone in the galaxy had a special power called current gift. For some, the current gift may show up earlier than others; for some it may be a boon and for some, it could be a curse. Ryzek's sister, Cyra Noavek, possesses an unusual current gift, a gift that could make her cause pain to others. The current flows through her.

Everyone in the galaxy are defined by their fates. Akos was a peace loving thuvhe buy, son of an Oracle. His fate is to die serving the family of Noavek. (According to the first part.) He and his elder brother are kidnapped to Ryzek, who made Akos as Cyra's personal assistant because his current gift was to interrupt the current. Ryzek tries to make Eijeh his Oracle, but as this does not succeed, he trades his memories with him. This makes Eijeh and Ryzek the same person, only differing in their physiques. Akos is determined to help Eijeh get out of that place, no matter what. At first, relationship between Akos and Cyra is a little bit complicated, but eventually, things are settled. In fact, after his escape from the Shotet, Akos comes back to save Cyra from her brother, who uses her to fulfill his own obligations.

The story is really interesting. As one starts reading, all he would remember about his own world would be flipping the pages. When I was reading, I had actually sunken into the book. The culture of the Shotet is fascinating to read;a clan that adorns bravery and helds arena challenges. And the fact of people from nine planets travelling to visit each other's planet is attractive; in real life, we can't even handle space. Like the vacuum in space, their space had the currents flowing. Also, there's one more thing I noticed; Cyra has a few qualities of Tris. (from divergent, by the same author) Both of them are strong, they don't want anyone to define them, they want to be independent and finally, they are the ones who would have made a lot of sacrifices. I've admired both of these characters, and I hope you admire them too!

Saturdays with BK Uncle

Edit 1 : This is something I wrote a long time ago. repurposing for entertainment purposes. any harm thus caused isn't intentional; it happens to be a byproduct. Nobody knows how old BK Uncle is. Some say he's 60; some say he's awaiting his 80th birthday next month. He's been around for a long time. "Long time" might not seem so long, but for this young flat, it feels like an eternity. Old BK seemed nice; he'd converse with anyone he encountered. The four W's never mattered until they came out of him. People got used to his habits, like any obedient student would in an assembly. Well, most people. My interactions with BK Uncle have been quite amusing on my end and irritating on his. Incidentally, most of my interactions with BK Uncle happen on Saturdays. Probably because that's when I'm home, and I take a stroll in the lobby. Not so long ago, I'd play with my friends in the same lobby—it didn't matter what day of the week it was. Times...

Afterthoughts - YellowFace

It took me a while to finish this book. Longer than I'd like to admit. Partly because engineering can get exhausting; sometimes all you want to do is sit still and stare into the void. And also because this book allows you to take breaks. Yellowface - by Rebecca F. Kuang Unlike many books that demand emotional stamina, this one pauses. Not every book offers to halt its flavour for your comfort. There are books that get you emotionally invested, and books that slowly get you in the zone. We've all binge-read books, if not series, simply because it lured you into an all-consuming world. Yellowface isn't a lot of things, and it certainly is not bait. It probably isn't something you would find everyone mentioning, and it doesn't leave you with characters to love. But it reminds you, in all gory detail, about the parts of you that'd have inevitably surfaced at times. Every century has had its patron cause. The 19th and early 20th centuries were about women's suf...
