Although people say they like everyone in One Direction, everyone will have their personal favorite from the popular band. Likewise, my personal favorite from the band of yoga is Surya Namaskar. Sun salutations can energize and warm you, even on the darkest, coldest winter day. A very good morning to one and all present here. I’m Bharath from SRDFVV. Isn’t the sun bright? Beautiful and yellow, yet the hottest ball in the sky. Wait, why am I talking about the sun all of a sudden? If you guys have this question, here’s the answer. I’m going to talk about the effects of Surya Namaskar on personality.
Let’s go with the basics. When you hear this name, you think of the exhausting exercise that is implemented on you as a punishment. But really, not many know the exact meaning of Surya Namaskar. Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation, is a Yoga warm up routine based on a sequence of gracefully linked asanas. The nomenclature refers to the symbolism of Sun as the soul and the source of all life. Okay, who started this? Please don’t imagine as it deals with the sun, it is Karna who did this, being the son of the sun. It totally doesn’t make sense. The surya Namaskar has its history in the Vedas, the most ancient of Hindu scriptures, which prescribed a morning tribute to the sun. It turns out that there’s science behind the spirituality. At its core, and as its very name suggests, the surya Namaskar is about the Sun—which sustains life on the planet and is our primary source of warmth and light. It gives us the Vitamin D we need to build our bones, and the serotonin we need to stay happy and productive.
Personality is a word which combines an individual’s characteristics and qualities. Now the actual question of my lecture is, ͞how is surya Namaskar related to an individual’s personality?͟ Well, practicing surya Namaskar can reduce stress. Surya Namaskar is also a best form of cardiovascular exercise. It also increases the mind’s stability and the capacity to withstand anything. A mindful person is by nature more aware of other people’s feelings and hence tends to exhibit more empathy and kindness. Regular Surya Namaskar practice not only helps individuals with their personal health but benefits the entire society by moving people towards a more harmonious life one individual at a time. In total, if every single individual of this generation practice this asana, I’m sure that our future will be healthier and stronger in all aspects. And by individuals, I mean you, me and everyone.
Before concluding my speech, let me tell you guys an interesting thing. A 99 year old woman from Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu has received Padma Shri award. Do you know what her contribution was? She has been teaching yoga to thousands of people and spreading the ancient spiritual practice across Tamil Nadu. Nanammal has also received the Karnataka Government’s Yoga Ratna Award. While receiving it, she reportedly performed in front of a 20,000-strong audience. She has been practicing yoga from the age of 10. Isn’t she a great inspiration for us?
I hope after witnessing my talk, you would no longer feel that surya Namaskar is an exhausting punishment. Next time when you get to do surya Namaskar, thank your teacher for giving you a chance to relax yourself and boost your energy. The sun is the soul of all moving and unmoving things. So practice surya Namaskar and boost your energy without having boost.
Thank you
