I am really on a reading spree now. How many tenth graders get half a day school and postponed vacation with no major works? Well, I did, so I decided I’d get addicted to my kindle. It’s been ages since I completed a new series, but I have completed one now. It’s called the Hunger Games, and you all know about it. Maybe not directly, but everyone here today is familiar with it. Stick till the end to know how.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen lives in the 12th district of a country called the Panem. The capitol has supreme control over all the districts, and no one can do
anything about it. In fact, once there were 13 districts, and the 13th district rebelled against the capitol. As a result, a) the district was destroyed, and b) the remaining districts had to send 1 boy and 1 girl between the age of 12 and 18 to participate in an annual pageant called the Hunger Games. The teens are selected on a lottery kind of system, and they must fight against each other in the arena. The one last remaining victor would be crowned the winner. The purpose of the Games is to entertain the capitol and to serve as a reminder of the dark days. (days of the rebellion.) Katniss’s sister Prim is selected to participate in the 74th Games, and Katniss volunteers to replace her sister in order to save her. Peeta Mellark is also selected as a tribute. Both are mentored by Haymitch, the only living victor from the 12th district. And this is where the story becomes interesting.
The second and third part are coated with unexpected twists and turns, victories and losses. Ultimately, it does come to an end, and you can’t believe that it all ended so soon. I was hardly able to keep the book down when I started reading. Though I admit, there’s a lot of violence in there, but nothing comes without a reason. The story is basically set in a rebellious background, and you can’t expect a peaceful story with a happy ending. But it does have a happy ending.
Now, to the part of why does this sound familiar. You guys know the PUBG game, right? Basically, the players are sent to an island where they must scavenge for weapons and hunt each other down, without getting themselves killed. And the winner gets the famous “Chicken Dinner.” Though this game is said to be inspired by a Japanese film called Battle Royale, you can find some sort of resemblance between the series and the game if you read the book. So, this would be a perfect read for this vacation. And oh! One last thing:
“May the odds ever be in your favor.”
