From BT(o)S

As we make progress from ‘waiting for the right day’ to unexpected occasions to account for, I’ve wanted to write about them for quite some time now. Most of us know them, but only some of us know why they are what they are today. Today happens to be the 13th of June 2021, the eighth anniversary of BTS’s debut, which happens to be the talk of the world right now, and well, this blog post.

We shall begin from the base. BTS, or Bangtan Sonyeondan, is a seven-membered Korean boy band that has taken over the center of the pop stage. With hip-hop as their base, they have been maintaining a ‘fusion’ style since the very beginning. Their albums cover a variety of themes, and most of their songs are in Korean. They have produced two English songs, Dynamite and Butter, and both have been placed No 1 during their releases.

We have had a lot of boy bands before, but BTS’s follower base is mind-blowing. As of an impromptu research conducted in 2020, they have more than 90 million fans worldwide. The previous teen sensation One Direction had a 50 million global fan base before their dissolution. And the main reason behind this success, I believe is their versatility in choosing themes. While we associate music with almost all our emotions, songs backing the themes of love and its tales are unarguably huge in number. But BTS’s themes include, bullying, overcoming fear/following your dreams, willpower, hard work, mental illness and wellness, societal expectations, social injustice, self-confidence among many others.

The one silver lining here is that all their musical lyrics are in Korean. Though music does not have boundaries, the inhibition to listen to it due to linguistic differences is fairly common. In fact, that was the main reason it took me too long to expand my cultural knowledge as well. I was introduced to their music in eighth grade, and it took me two years to break the barrier I set for myself. I’ve seen my friends getting teased for being their fans, and sometimes I’ve done it too. But life is not a smooth ride, and just like the army’s say, they always find you and lift you up in your lowest points.

I’m not listing their achievements and accolades here you have the Wikipedia for that. But if you are willing to try, listen to their music. There are translated versions of the lyrics available. I’m pretty sure that whatever be the prejudices you had, will cease to exist. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Ps: Consider this my official army application 😊

Saturdays with BK Uncle

Edit 1 : This is something I wrote a long time ago. repurposing for entertainment purposes. any harm thus caused isn't intentional; it happens to be a byproduct. Nobody knows how old BK Uncle is. Some say he's 60; some say he's awaiting his 80th birthday next month. He's been around for a long time. "Long time" might not seem so long, but for this young flat, it feels like an eternity. Old BK seemed nice; he'd converse with anyone he encountered. The four W's never mattered until they came out of him. People got used to his habits, like any obedient student would in an assembly. Well, most people. My interactions with BK Uncle have been quite amusing on my end and irritating on his. Incidentally, most of my interactions with BK Uncle happen on Saturdays. Probably because that's when I'm home, and I take a stroll in the lobby. Not so long ago, I'd play with my friends in the same lobby—it didn't matter what day of the week it was. Times...

Afterthoughts - YellowFace

It took me a while to finish this book. Longer than I'd like to admit. Partly because engineering can get exhausting; sometimes all you want to do is sit still and stare into the void. And also because this book allows you to take breaks. Yellowface - by Rebecca F. Kuang Unlike many books that demand emotional stamina, this one pauses. Not every book offers to halt its flavour for your comfort. There are books that get you emotionally invested, and books that slowly get you in the zone. We've all binge-read books, if not series, simply because it lured you into an all-consuming world. Yellowface isn't a lot of things, and it certainly is not bait. It probably isn't something you would find everyone mentioning, and it doesn't leave you with characters to love. But it reminds you, in all gory detail, about the parts of you that'd have inevitably surfaced at times. Every century has had its patron cause. The 19th and early 20th centuries were about women's suf...
